In this blog we will be exploring a specific point of the epic of the Beowulf poem. We will be looking at the build up to where our hero Beowulf takes on his final battle in this mortal realm against the dragon and a new hero appears to take up Beowulf’s impossible mantle of greatness and spreads the story of the old hero’s final conquest.
Beowulf is an unique Old English poem that has been around since the sixth century and is a 'heroic narrative' about Beowulf and his great deeds in the land of the Danes to him being king of the Geats and having the provenance of 50 years of peace. The poem being written between the sixth and tenth century we do not know who the original author was nor if the translation we are reading is completely accurate. I have perused the Seamus Heaney's translated version of Beowulf because of the belief by many that it is the most realistic translation.
